Million Fathers March

SUBJECT:                Million Father March, First Day of School

Improving Student Achievement

Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) is actively promoting regular school attendance and academic achievement in a promotion campaign called the Million Father March 2014. On the first day of school in more than 700 cities men will take children to school to help our children be safer, more secure and better students.  Educators and community members estimate that over 1,000,000 men will participate in the 2014 march!  The Million Father March will provide an opportunity for male caregivers of all ethnicities to participate and be a significant positive presence on HUSD campuses.

HUSD Involvement

Research shows that students whose father (or male role model) takes an active role in their educational life earn better grades, enjoy school more, and are far more likely to graduate from high school and attend college. Our students are looking forward to returning to school, and we hope that this event will be a great way to kick-off a new year.

To support the event, we ask that sites organize the following on the first day of school; a staff member to greet parents, sign-in station for visitors and a culminating event to close the program. We expect that Million Father March activities will take between 45-90 minutes at the start of the first day of school.

This year, Lorin Eden Elementary School will be the host site offering expanded activities for male caregivers and the community. Last years’ event had a strong turnout with over 400 participants; we anticipate this years’ event to surpass those numbers.  As the time draws closer, we will continue to update you on the progress of the planning stages.  We encourage each site to collaborate with their staff in creating unique activities to commemorate the day.

The Million Father March 2014 campaign is only possible through the support of our site leaders and community.
